International Selection for CBC Rowers

Hi Everyone

We have had a fine season to date and have had some great news from the High Performance Group in Rowing Ireland regarding representative honours bestowed upon seven of our Junior Athletes. This is as much a reflection on the Coaching group, the Committee, the Parents support group and the general ethos of the Club as it is on the individuals. However they are only allowing the Athletes wear the green of Ireland and represent their Country in upcoming International events. As a collective we are proud of their success and indeed many of us will be travelling to support our charges at the events below (I would encourage as many as possible to travel).

If you are in the Club at any stage over the next few weeks please congratulate the Rowers and lets share what is a great achievement for the individuals but also the wider group. We will find a way to mark these selections over the coming weeks and if you have any thoughts and suggestions please bring them forward.

Cork Boat Club Child Welfare Policy

Dear Coaches, Volunteers and Parents,

In the interests of child welfare and in line with best practise, Cork Boat Club committee has recently reviewed guidelines from Rowing Ireland on this topic and have also consulted with external practitioners to help us put together a child welfare policy which will ensure a safe operating environment for all our minor rowers, our coaches and volunteers.

We are attaching the new policy which was recently approved by Cork Boat Club Committee having consulted with the Club Captain and a some club coaches at a recent coaches meeting. We feel that this reflects the many communications challenges in the multi-media world in which we live today. We request that all club coaches and volunteers embrace the spirit of this document.

Some key changes to note:

We are asking that no private online connections exist between coaches / volunteers and minor rowers via Facebook, Twitter, Text messaging, Skype, social media etc. All messaging regarding squad or club events such as training times, crew selection etc. should only happen in open forum via the Club Facebook Group or an officially designated squad Facebook group. All coaches / volunteers are asked to un-friend minor rowers on Facebook if those connections exist and to ensure that no private connections with minor rowers exist via any of the modern social media.

The Club’s Child Welfare Officers, Frank O’Leary and Karen Jeffers, are available to answer queries at any time.

The policy document can be accessed here.

The document can be reviewed and altered, if necessary, over time.

Best Regards,

Frank O’Leary and Karen Jeffers

Launching the New Boat Fund

Dear Friend of Cork Boat Club,

Our Club has undergone many positive changes in recent times. We have grown our membership to record levels especially with so many new younger members, our building and grounds have been greatly improved and a new sense of community has emerged with parents getting heavily involved in helping the club with our Café and other projects. We should all be proud that we are truly a club that is going places thanks to so many people getting involved and the great Boat Club spirit we witness every day.

As we continue to aim for new heights as a Club, the need for new sources of funding has become very clear. We have made solid progress in getting new sponsorship from local companies and getting grant aid from some sources, and members continue to give huge support to our many one-off fundraising initiatives such as our annual Race Night and our recent Defibrillator fundraiser. However a Boat Club of our size and infrastructure requires significant funding to maintain a reasonable quality of boats, buildings and services and we often find ourselves making difficult decisions over spending priorities and having to postpone essential projects due to lack of funds.

To try to improve our ability to specifically purchase boats and boating equipment, we are launching a New Cork Boat Club Boat Fund in February. This will be managed by Cork Boat Club Committee on behalf of the members and will give us much needed monthly cash-flow to buy boats, spare parts etc on an ongoing basis.

We know that times are very tough for everyone, and not everyone will be able to support this plan, but we hope that as many of you as possible including our Boat Club diaspora, will find it possible to support this drive. Our ask is that parents, members and former members who feel they can support the new boat fund will sign up as soon as possible.

We have pitched the monthly contribution at €15 but any monthly amount would be fantastic. To give you a sense of how this could make a difference to your Club – if we are lucky enough to get 30 members / parents to contribute, it will generate €450 per month or €5400 per year – that is a HUGE amount of new funding for the club, which would make an immense difference to everyone.

We are targeting February 18th as the first withdrawal date but any date of your choosing is not an issue. If you feel you can sign up, the club and future generations of Cork Boat Club would be most grateful. It will genuinely give us a new platform to grow as a Club.

Please use the attached standing order form which has all relevant details and you can either return it to me (Emmet Walsh, President Cork Boat Club, 14 Carmen Lawn, Rochestown, Cork) or return it yourself to your own bank. Please feel to call me directly on 086-3965670 with any queries.

You will find the Standing Order form here

Thank you for your consideration and as always, Go Boat Club!

Ergathon Details – Saturday September 15th from 11AM

Hi Everyone
Just another reminder of the Open day/Ergathon for all members (past, present, new) this Saturday starting at 11am in the Club. We are looking for as full a turn out as we can and we expect to mark the occasion with a group photo as we have done in the past. The Cafe will be open throughout. Niall Duncan will be running the Ergathon for all interested parties and he tells me the ground rules are

All teams must carry out some running on the Marina collectively.

Each team will have one ergometer only so one at a time

As many team members as the team chooses can run simultaneously.
